Physiofixme
Origins
Physiofixme was started in 2004 by owner director Rachael Burke, BHSc(physiotherapy), Dip MT, NZSP
Rachael first got the idea for PHYSIOFIXME while treating a New Zealander who was living and working overseas. He was back in New Zealand on holiday and was seeking treatment for a knee injury which he had been putting up with for some time as he didn't have access to knowledgeable well trained sports physiotherapists. He had access to a gym but wasn't sure which exercises he should be doing and most things he tried seemed to aggravate his knee injury. He was treated by Rachael who then set him up with an exercise program. Once he had returned to his overseas posting she started emailing him updates of other exercises he could do and the idea grew from there.
Why listen to us?
A physiotherapist's background is one of injury rehabilitation. This is an important difference when it comes to designing an exercise program as opposed to individuals whose background is only in exercise prescription. The rehabilitation following injury is a skill unique to physiotherapists.
The emphasis of New Zealand trained physiotherapists working in private practice is on biomechanics and exercise with the view of improving an individual's movement in order to benefit their overall health and well being. Physiotherapy is an allied health profession based on a medical science model and not considered to be an alternative medicine but a conventional medicine.
A well designed structured and specific exercise program is vital in people's rehabilitation. Physiotherapy treatment can help in decreasing pain, but of equal importance is the rehabilitation or strengthening process in order to return to normal function and prevent problems in the future.
Other exercise specialists often don't have the same depth of knowledge or scientific background to deal with the injured client and are unable to adapt an exercise programme to account for these injuries. Not every exercise program will suit someone recovering from pain or injury.
Technique is also very important when it comes to targeting the right muscles and preventing further injuries which is something physiotherapists have a lot of experience with.
Personal
On a personal note the team at Physiofixme have experienced many sporting injuries through leading active lifestyles which has fueled an interest in sporting injuries and how to prevent them. Through trial and error Physiofixme has designed excellent strength training programmes to help build core strength to help overcome those niggling recurring injuries.
Rachael is also a mother of two children so knows how quickly core muscles can be compromised if you don't work on strengthening them before and after child birth. She has been down the road of recovery from running injuries and pregnancy and has managed to get herself back on track to being able to run and exercise injury free.
The team at Physiofixme believe the right exercises and advice are vital in this recovery process which is why we are confident our exercise programs can help you.
